In bed with IKEA

We were one of the 10 finalists for the ‘In bed with Ikea’ competition. This event was jointly organized by MIX FM and IKEA on April 1st, at IKANO Power Center, hosted by Mix FM Breakfast Crew, Richard and Shazmin.

The winner went home with a IKEA bedroom set and vouchers worth RM 6,000, while the 2nd and 3rd winners went home with IKEA vouchers worth RM 2,000 and RM 1,000 respectively.

When I submitted my competition application, I didn’t think that we would even be selected as one of the finalist. We were required to submit two creative ideas on how to use the mattress. My ideas were...
1. Hook all four corners of the bed to a ceiling and use it as a swing;
2. Pile up mattress of different sizes. Great for the children’s room, as they like spilt level corners in their room.

Only nine couples turned up on Saturday for the finals. We were to go through elimination rounds till we get the winners. Hubby and I were all set for the elimination rounds.

For the first round, we were supposed to balance both of us, using only the body parts mentioned by the Mix FM crew. Sound easy? Try it out. You’ll be upside down on the floor already! Imagine, the two of you should be on the ground with just...
• 1st : One left leg, one right leg, and one left hand;
• 2nd : Two heels, one bum, three fingers, one shoulder (no hands, elbows, feets on the floors!);
• 3rd : Half bum, half shoulder, one leg, two elbows;
• Finally : Two heads, one leg, one toe, two elbows!

In this round, only one couple was eliminated. Everyone was good!

Then, it was the sausage hop. It was not an elimination round, just a round to know who would go first in the next round. Here, we go second, with just 16 seconds (the first couple got 14 seconds).

The unfortunate round. We were supposed to choose one drawer and see what the note inside it says… whether we proceed to the next round, or go back HOME! And that is when we got kicked out. Hmm, I guess luck was not on our side that day.

Those lucky, went on another elimination round, where the fastest three couple to build a IKEA furniture (a small one) would proceed to the finals. After that, they would have to answer 5 quiz questions. The fastest couple to return only had 4 answers right. The second and last couple for all 5 right.

I thought they would choose the winners based on the fastest couple who came back with the quiz answers when it was a tie. Oddly, they had a tie breaker. Hmmm, if in that case, all three of them should have taken their own sweet time and made sure all the answers were right, so that all three couples can qualify for the tie breaker ;)

The tie breaker was to name the IKEA bed brand that they were going to win, which was on the stage at that time! With Shazmin sitting on the bed, I was even worried that they might turn her over. They had to be careful.. after all, she’s pregnant :P

After the frantic search, the couple who came in last with the quiz answers became the 1st prize winners. How lucky!

Since this is the first time I joined any competition, being a finalist was equally satisfying for us. Nevertheless, we are happy that we got the consolation prize of IKEA voucher worth RM 300 and a breakfast tray (for being good sports during their games).
